A Microchip is a Necessity......not an accessory ! ™
Statistically speaking...
Did you know that approximately 8-12 MILLION pets enter animal shelters annually in the United States? That is a staggering number!
With recent natural disasters and an increase in pet theft, being able to identify your pet has become a hot topic. One in three pets will go missing at some point during it’s lifetime. Without proper identifcation, 90% will never return home. Consider this: in a recent study, less than half of lost dogs and only one-fifth of lost cats had ANY form of identification when they went missing, No tag, no microchip, no tattoo.
In yet another recent study covering approximately 53 animal shelters (which is a decent cross-section) in the United States, only 1.8% of stray cats and 21.9% of stray dogs were able to be reunited with their owners. The same study found that 38.5% of the stray cats with registered microchips were REUNITED and 52.2% of the stray dogs with registered microchips were REUNITED. Many people rely on collars and tags to identify their pets; tags and collars may be removed or destroyed. Even tattoos must be registered with a national registry to help ensure your pet can get back to you in case of an emergency.
There is a large and growing number of people who use microchips to identify their pets. If you travel internationally, this is the only accepted identification method that some countries will allow.
The largest company registering microchips is the AKC REUNITE program (which we use). A microchip implant takes just seconds at your home or wherever your pet feels most comfortable and then your pet has a permanent ID that will last for the pet's lifetime. We only use ISO microchips.
Some veterinary offices may enroll your pet in one of the microchip registries; but not all! Most veterinary hospitals, animal shelters and humane societies have scanners for these microchips. We have found, however, that most of the scanners are NOT reading the microchip! Most of these scanners may be outdated. We use the AKC Universal Scanner and have detected chips in pets that were not NOT detected in some veterinary offices.
If a pet is found, it can be scanned, and the number can be checked online to help get these pets back to their owners. Most registry services allow the ability to update your information online if you move or change phone numbers and MOST charge annual fees and charge for other information changes. We use the largest registry, AKC, and NEVER charge Annual Fees nor charge for updates in owner info!
