I Got Another Dog
January 6, 2014 in Pets, Pets-PAWS FOR THOUGHT
I got another dog today
She’s nothing much like you
If truth be told, she is not old
In fact, she ate my shoe.
I thought that if I got her
I’d fill that Void inside
The one that brought me to my knees
The day you up and died.
It matters not a whit to me
That time was near; I knew it
I felt that though your days grew dim
We’d somehow both pull through it.
I wanted you to live forever
My buddy, pal, my Friend
Your age and body turned on us
We had to face the end.
I think about the times we “talked”
And of our walks together
And how we nestled hand in paw
In damp and chilly weather.
There’s so much to remember
So much that I regret
There is one thing so certain
And that’s you, I won’t forget.
I got another dog today
She barks, and pees, and drools
She’s completely disobedient
With no regard for rules.
What’s this? It just came back to me
You did those very things
And suddenly, while watching her
My heart began to sing…
Cuz something small and somehow soft
A spark, or tiny pearl
In her huge brown eyes, in her smiling eyes
Just made me think of you, Old Girl…
It made me think of you.
I got another dog today
We’re going out for a walk
On the way I’ll tell her things
Like when we used to talk.
It’s true I’ll write this once again
When pain eclipses joy
When I go outside, when I’m all alone
When I find a buried toy.
I’ll get in my car and come back again
This much I know is true
I’ll get another dog that day
Yet another just like you.
While we can’t prevail against the untimely demise of our pets, we are able to help them in other ways!

Thanks, Star! Y’know…
I cried when I wrote it
I cried during proofs
It didn’t get better
When my tears smudged the goofs!
